To obtain a low-cost coffin that does not cause environmental pollution by forming the main body of a coffin of at least one selected from among three materials such as a paper tube, a material containing paper as a main component, and a material containing an ordinary resin.
The coffin 1 is furnished with a lid section 3, leg sections 4, 4 provided at the bottom of a storing section 2, a laying-in-state plate 5 on which a corpse is placed, which is provided in the storing section 2, and hinges 6, 6 that connect the lid portion to the storing section 2. In such a case, the storing section 2 having a half-cylindrical shape and the lid section 3 are formed mainly of a paper tube and also of a material made by hardening a paper powder with a resin and molding it. As the resin, a biodegradable resin is most suitable from the point of view of environmental protection. The biodegradable resin is in the form of pellets or a powder of cornstarch, for example, and is bacterially degradable.
