PURPOSE: To increase the surface hardness of a wire-shaped body and prevent the scratching thereof by housing and installing a coiling drum into a bottomed tank-shaped outside shell and coiling the wire-shaped body while spraying water between the coiling drum and the outside cylinder.

CONSTITUTION: Coil hold-down members 90 are positioned right above the outside shell 34 and cooling water is ejected from the bottom parts thereof. A motor 28 is driven to revolve a vertical driving shaft 22, the shell 34, a pan 38 and the coiling drum 40 and the coiling of the wire-shaped body is started by the drum 40. The motor 28 is stopped upon ending of the coiling and after the spraying of the cooling water is stopped, a hydraulic cylinder 92 is actuated to rise the members 90 to the position conforming to the coil height from a floor surface 1. The cooling water in the shell 34 is discharged and a hydraulic cylinder 66 is actuated to lift a supporting shaft 36 by which the pan 38 and the drum 40 are lifted together with the coil to bring the top surface of the pan 38 to the same height as the height of the floor surface 1. A hydraulic cylinder 92 is thereafter actuated to press the members 90 atop the coil and a hydraulic cylinder 86 is actuated to lower a clamp 84a. The drum 40 is detained by air pressure and the drum 40 is removed from the coil.
