To highly precisely and inexpensively detect not only the projecting and recessing shapes of a coin 3 but also holes in simple configurations.
A coin discriminating device is provided with an adding means 41 for calculating and outputting the sum of two detection signals obtained by coils 4 and 5 for detection. The macro-information of the surface of the coin 3 is acquired on the basis of an output signal equivalent to the sum outputted by the adding means 41 so that the presence/absence of any "hole" can be satisfactorily detected. Thus, it is made possible to satisfactorily detect the projecting and recessing shapes of the coin on the basis of a differential output signal and the detection of the hole on the basis of the output signal of the sum by using a single device.
