To provide a coin processing apparatus capable of rejecting counterfeit coins even if such coins are accepted by mistake.

The coin processing apparatus 1 comprises an electronic coin inspection device 4 for validating coins; a normal coin sorting part 6 by which counterfeit coins sorted out by the electronic coin inspection device are directed to a dispensing passage while normal coins are directed to a receiving passage; a coin classification part 5 by which the coins directed to the receiving passage are classified according to their denominations; and a change storage part 19 for storing the coins classified according to their denominations. The coin processing apparatus 1 further includes a coin retaining part 13 provided between the coin classification part 5 and the change storage part 19 for storing the coins classified by the coin classification part 5 and classified according to their denominations, and has a retained coin sorting part 18 provided for directing the coins stored in the coin retaining part 13 to either the dispensing passage or a storage passage communicating with the change storage part.
