PURPOSE: To prevent generation of chatter etc., and to obtain stable dimensions, by arranging in order the shearing direction of the end of a material, and the short side diection of a shape of a molding, so as to be inclined at a prescribed value or below, when forging molding whose reduction of area is severe.

CONSTITUTION: A material 1 shorn by a press is inserted into a die 2, and is made to form a flat shape having severe reduction of area (≥70%) by pressing a punch 3 in the direction as indicated with P in the figure. In this case, the direction of the material 1 is controlled so that a center line 6 of the material passing through a shorn surface 5A of the end of the material 1 press-contacting with the punch 3 crosses a center line 7 of the material in the short side direction of a shape of a molding at an angle of 10° or less. According to said method, generation of chatter or stick slip phenomenon is prevented, and a beautiful forging having stable dimensions is obtained.
