To obtain the subject compound suitable as an acid useful for producing an active ingredient for a pyrethroid-based insecticide by using (-)-1R,3R,4R- p-menethane-3,8-diol as a reagent for optical resolution.

(1RS)-trans-3-(2,2-Dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxlic acid or its reactive derivative is reacted with (-)-1R,3R,4R-p-menthane-3,8-diol of formula I to give a diastereomer mixture of an ester compound of formula II. Then the diastereomer mixture is crystallized to give one of a diastereomer of an ester compound of formula III. The diastereomer is hydrolyzed to efficiently give the objective compound.
