To provide columnar protrusions for setting the thickness of a liquid crystal layer and improve display quality by forming a transparent conductive layer to expose the upper end faces of the columnar protrusions on plural given areas on a substrate.
A color filter 1 has a substrate 2, a black matrix 3 formed on the substrate 2 and a coloring layer 5. Columnar protrusions 6 are formed in plural proper areas on the black matrix 3. A transparent conductive layer 8 (an oblique line) is formed to cover the black matrix 3, the coloring layer 5 and the columnar protrusions 6. The upper end faces and the side walls of the columnar protrusions 6 are exposed, without being covered with the transparent conductive layer 8. In this way, if an orientation layer existing between the columnar protrusion 6 and a TFT array substrate is destroyed, no electric short-circuit between the transparent conductive layer 8 and an electrode on the TFT array substrate.
