PURPOSE: To prevent the variance of brightness and the break of color balance by making effective areas of respective color elements different from one another so that their outputs are uniform in one picture element.
CONSTITUTION: With respect to a color filter used in a color liquid crystal display device, area rates of respective color elements B, G, and R in a picture element 1 are made different from one another in consideration of spectral characteristics and luminous efficiencies of the color filter and a light source. With respect to the color filter used in a color photosensor, area rates of color elements 14B, 14G, and 14R brought into contact with individual electrodes 16B, 16G, and 16R are made different from one another in consideration of the spectral sensitivity characteristic of a photoconductive layer. By this constitution, the brightness of the color filter used in the display element or device is uniformized to improve the color balance.
