PURPOSE: To obtain a color filter having excellent resistance to heat and water by forming a thin film consisting of a simple substance of an org. metal compd. or the mixture composed thereof in the form of metal oxide on a transparent substrate and absorbing an org. dye to the thin film.

CONSTITUTION: The thin film 2 consisting of the simple substance of the org. metal compd. expressed by the general formula M(OR1)(OR2)XYn or the mixture composed thereof in the form of the metal oxide is formed on the transparent substrate 1, and the org. dye 4 is adsorbed to the thin film 2, by which a pattern is formed; further an over coat layer 5 is formed on the thin film 2. In the formula, M denotes a metal atom selected from the group consisting of titanium, hafnium, germanium, tin, etc. R1, R2 denote an alkyl group or acyl group, R1 and R2 may be the same or different. X, Y denote at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, chlorine atom, hydroxyl group, alkoxy group and acyloxy group and may be the same as each other and the same as R1, R2 or may be different therefrom. n=0 When M is the metal atom of group III and n=1 when M is the metal atom of group IV.
