Abstract:
To provide a color liquid crystal shutter having a wide angle of visibility and excellent durability, and a method for driving it.
The liquid crystal shutter 3 is provided with a neutral polarizing plate 11, variable retardation plates 21, 22 comprising a pair of transmissive substrates and a smectic liquid crystal held between the substrates and imparting different retardation in accordance with signal voltages, and color polarizing plates 12-15 in order. Directions of the slow axes of the variable retardation plates 21, 22 are switched at least in three levels.
