Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the vertical resolution of a color difference signal is insufficient in a B picture when encoding a color moving image with a 4:2:0 format, and that necessary information volume increases for subjective picture quality when encoding a color moving image with a 4:2:2 format.
SOLUTION: At the time of encoding a P (I) picture, a luminance signal is encoded as a sequential scan picture by a subtractor 4, a 8×8 DCT 5, a digitizer 6, and a variable length encoder 7, and a color difference signal is encoded as a moving image signal with a 4:2:0 format in which the scanning line is thinned out so as to be half of that of the sequential scan image. Also, at the time of encoding a B picture, both the luminance signal and the color difference signal are encoded as a moving image signal so that the scanning line is thinned out so as to be half of that of the sequential scan image by a frame delay unit 13, a subtractor 14, a scanning line thinning unit 15, a 8×4 DCT 16, a 8×8 DCT 18, a switch 19, and a digitizer 17.
