To provide a color separation and synthesis device that allows easy optical arrangement and can be easily minimized in size, and to provide a projection type display device using the above device.
The color separation and synthesis device includes a first prism element where illumination light enters and synthesized modulation light exits, a second prism element joined to the first prism element and provided with a first wavelength selection filter for wavelength separation on the joined face, and a third prism element joined to the second prism element and provided with a second wavelength selection filter for wavelength separation on the joined face. The first, the second and the third prism elements have second, third and fourth faces to which spatial light modulators are disposed as opposed. The second, the third and the fourth faces are disposed at relational positions giving the same optical path length to each color component light passing through the first, the second and the third spatial light modulators in the color separation and synthesis device.
