PURPOSE: To provide a column type shift lever that is easy to set a return spring, and further less in an offset between a shift shaft or the turning center of shift operation and a select shaft or the turning center of select operation.

CONSTITUTION: This shift lever unit is featured that a retainer 3 equipped with a fixed shaft regulating a shift shaft X is installed in a column tube 1, and an X-shaped shift bracket 5 is installed free of rotation around the fixed shaft of this retainer, then the shift lever 11 is installed, free of rotation, in a select pipe 8 regulating a select shaft Y of the shift bracket, while any motion of this shift bracket 6 is transmitted to a shift cable 40 via a bell crank 18. In addition, a motion of the shift lever 11 is made so as to be transmitted to a select cable 39 by an engaged piece 14 as the constitution.
