To provide a combined lathe with a tool rest having a rotary tool shaft and a turret tool rest, for machining the front ends of slender shaft-like works without giving chatter vibration thereto, namely, for machining the front ends of individual works individually different in machining shape, machining size and machining position after machining other portions.
The work is machined in procedures including a machining process for machining a horizontal hole 73 in the front end of the work. A lever material 43 extending in the direction perpendicular to a Z-axis is mounted on a predetermined tool mounting station for a turret 41 of the turret tool rest 4, and the horizontal hole 73 is machined in the work 7 gripped by a spindle. Then, the spindle is fixed in such a phase that the horizontal hole is set in the extending direction, the lever material 43 is inserted into the horizontal hole 73 with the movement of the turret tool rest 4, and then the turret tool rest 4 is energized in the Z-axial direction of leaving the spindle. In this state, the work 7 gripped by the spindle is machined with a rotary tool 51 mounted on the rotary tool shaft.
