PURPOSE: To promote the efficiency of machining, by providing a tool magazine beside a bed, making the axis of the magazine parallel with the transverse direction of a table and supporting many tools in the magazine to reduce the stroke of the table.

CONSTITUTION: A table 2 is supported on a bed 1 so that the table can slide in a direction X. A column 4 is supported on the table 2 so that the column can slide in a direction Y. A tool magazine 11 is installed on a fixed pedestal 10 besides the bed 1. Many tools T are supported in the magazine 11 and the axis of the magazine is made parallel with the direction X. A turret head 8 has a required spindle indexed to a machining position for a workpiece and a tool exchange position for the magazine 11. To return a tool from the turret head 8 into the magazine 11, empty holding claws are indexed to a tool exchange position, the turret head 8 is indexed, the table 2 is moved and the column 4 is used as an intermediate means.
