To properly control the temperatures of a DPF and an NOx trap catalyst when the DPF is regenerated and the S poisoning release of the NOx trap catalyst is performed.
In the regeneration of the DPF, a main combustion generating a main torque and a preliminary combustion performed before the main combustion are performed. A fuel injection is controlled and an exhaust λ is controlled to a target value so that the preliminary combustion occurs near a compression top dead center and the main combustion starts after the preliminary combustion is completed (S101, S102). When the temperature of the DPF is too high, a target EGR ratio is reduced for correction to suppress the exhaust of unburned HC and CO and reduce the heating amount of the HC and CO in the DPF so as to lower the temperature of the DPF (S110). When the temperature of the DPF is too low, the target EGR ratio is increased for correction to rise the temperature of the DPF (S109).
