Abstract:

To reduce HC and enhance combustion stability at cold engine.

When a fuel is injected from fuel injection valves 8, 9 into an intake passage 7, the fuel is injected two times. The first injection is performed during the exhaust stroke, and the second injection is performed during the intake stroke. The direction of injection is changed between the first injection and the second injection. In the first injection, the fuel is injected toward an intake valve 5, and in the second injection, it is injected toward an ignition plug 4 so that it is stratified around the ignition plug 4. As the combustion stability is enhanced, the ignition timing is retarded to increase the temperature of exhaust gases so that a catalyst can be early activated.
