To provide a communication apparatus and method conducting stable data communication at all times by selecting the communication system for adopting the cdma2000 1x system when a state of a reception data rate reaching a preset threshold value or below is consecutive for a prescribed period, in communication with the cdma2000 1x-EV DO system.

The communication apparatus is provided with: a transmission reception circuit 31 compatible with the cdma2000 1x-EV DO system; and a transmission reception circuit 32 compatible with the cdma2000 1x system. When a state of a reception data rate reaching a preset threshold value or below is consecutive for a prescribed period in the case of communication with the cdma2000 1x-EV DO system, a CPU 7 conducts processing of selecting the communication adopting the cdma2000 1x system.
