To avoid unnecessary line occupation and a waste of recording papers by detecting caller's information arriving, together with a call signal and selectively switching which of recording paper and a memory receive information is received with, according to whether or not there is the caller's information.

A CI signal is detected from a telephone line 27, a telephone number detection part 9 detects a caller's telephone number, and the detected information is displayed at an operation display section 5. Here, when the caller' s telephone number is detected, the caller's telephone number is matched so as to check whether or not the caller's telephone number is already registered as a recording paper recipient and when it is registered, automatic reception using the recording paper is carried out by using a recording section 7. When the caller's telephone number is not detected and when the caller's telephone number is not recorded or not registered as a recipient, memory reception in which the image data are recorded in the memory 3 is performed. Then the completion of the memory reception is visually displayed at the operation display part 5.
