This communication system includes of a transponder and a reader/writer carrying out proximal wireless communication by an inductive coupling method, wherein determination of whether the transponder is brought close to the reader/writer becomes accurate because electric field intensity is drastically changed with respect to distance, and can start communication according to the intention of a user carrying out an operation bringing the transponder close to the reader/writer. The communication system is equipped with a high-speed high-capacity wireless communication means, and achieves high-speed communication and reduction of power consumption by controlling its power-on/off in response to the result of determination of whether the transponder is brought close to the reader/writer.
