To provide an optical communication system capable communication having a small delay rate, a small discard rate and a high throughput by using a network which uses a wavelength division multiplexing and a time division multiplexing in combination.
This system has a wavelength multiplexing optical network 1 having a plurality of optical transmission channels of different wavelengths, a plurality of nodes 2 interconnected via this wavelength multiplexing optical network and performing transmission/reception by using the time slots into which each of the transmission channels is divided, and a network controller 3 for centrally controlling the time slot allocation for the plurality of nodes. To ensure common reception idle time slots for all of the plurality of nodes, the network controller moves the assigned time slots when an idle time slot is newly generated or the network controller is capable of another processing.
