To solve the problem wherein a liquid crystal display, having a high transmittance, glares when a backlight or a front light is used at a luminance of 100% in a dark environment and the problem wherein the halftone part of an image on a portable telephone is lost, conversely, in a bright environment, e.g. outdoor, as long as the backlight is not made brighten and the display quality results in deteriorates.
An environmental illuminance detecting circuit for detecting the ambient brightness is provided and the brightness of a display is controlled, depending on the output from the environmental illuminance detecting circuit and the characteristics of the display. Since the brightness of the display can be controlled depending on the ambient brightness, a good image can be viewed at all times.
