PURPOSE: To display information by a simple liquid crystal display type device, to display and confirm the contents of a disk and to improve the additive value of a CD by displaying additive information employing only character codes.

CONSTITUTION: Signals from a disk signal detection section 2 are waveform reformed by an analog waveform reforming section 3. These signals are synchronization detected by a synchronization detection section 4, processed in a digital signal processing section 5 and are inputted to a subcoding section 6. The tracking information is inputted into a tracking servo section 7 and controls the operations of an optical pickup. On the other hand, the contents of the subcoding are inputted to a character generation section 9 by the section 6, converted into prescribed characters or figures and outputted to a display section 10. In the section 10, the information added in a TOC area, such as the title of a music and others, is displayed. Thus, there exists no need for the use of subcodings R to W and a display device, such as a television set, is not required.
