To simplify the structure of a composite block while enhancing the structure by jointing a laminate of blanket composed of organic fibers and a castable refractory on a plane parallel with the direction of lamination through mortar.
A blanket composed of organic fibers is cut into a large number of pieces 4 having size of 100×300 mm, for example. A large number of pieces 4 are then laminated and compressed and then it is stitched with cotton thread to produce a laminate having size of 100×300×300 mm, for example. The laminate 1 is then coated, on one side (the side of 300×300 mm) parallel with the laminating direction of blanket, with mortar 2 produced by adding a specified quantity of binder to a commercially available mortar. Before the mortar is dried completely, a castable refractory 3 is poured to have thickness of about 50 mm, for example. The castable refractory is produced by adding a specified quantity of inorganic fibers to 'Variform(R) C-15' (available from Toshiba monoflux Co.).
