To provide a composite material in which cracks and metal veins upon infiltration of a molten material are prevented, and cleavages caused thereby are hard to occur, and a method for producing the same.
A composite material 10 comprises: a reinforcing material 11 for boron carbide forming a porous body; ceramic fiber 14 present by the weight ratio of 2 to 6% to the porous body of gaps 13 of the reinforcing material 11 of boron carbide; and a matrix 12 including metal silicon filled into the gap of the ceramic fiber 14. By the infiltration of the ceramics fiber 14 into the coarse gap 13 of the preform of boron carbide, resistance to breakage is generated. In this way, the cracks and metal veins upon infiltration of the molten material are prevented, and cleavages caused thereby can be prevented.
