Title:
COMPOSITE MATERIAL WITH FRACTURE PROPAGATION-PROOF FUNCTION AND FRACTURE PROPAGATION-PROOFING SYSTEM
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3474342
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the fracture of a composite material such as cracks from propagation through raising the rigidity of the composite material proper when unexpected external force is applied to the material.
SOLUTION: This composite material is so designed that the matrix is incorporated with shape memory alloy wires or fibers in such a state that both ends thereof to be connected to a heating source are exposed onto the surface of the composite material. Vibration or impact applied to the composite material is detected by an acoustic elastic wave sensor or a piezoelectric sensor of thin film shape, transduced into control signals by a computing element; and based on the control signals, the heating source to be fed to the shape memory alloy wires is controlled. The heated shape memory alloy wires then develop crystal phase transformation therein, effecting rise in both compressive force and rigidity of the wires, and leading to the mechanical strength of this composite material.
