To provide a composite member made of steel, and particularly a composite roll, which is used for hot rolling and cold rolling and has excellent wear resistance and crack resistance.
At least the surface layer part of an outer layer is composed of a sintered material where carbides and oxide ceramic fibers are dispersed through the matrix of an iron-base alloy. The size of the carbides including tie carbides of at least one element among V, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, and Hf and the carbides of at least one element among Cr, Mo, and W is regulated to ≤10 μm. The fibers in the sintered material are dispersed at 20-200 aspect ratio, 5-50 vol.% volume ratio, and 5-200 μm average interfibrous distance. Moreover, the iron-base alloy has a composition consisting of, by mass, 0.8-3.5% C, 2-7% Cr, ≤10%, Mo, ≤20% W, 1-15% of one or more elements among V, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, and Hf, ≤5% Ni, ≤10% Co, and the balance essentially Fe.
