To provide a method and a composition for modulating the activity of sirtuin deacetylase protein family members, p53 activity, apoptosis, and lifespan and sensitivity to stress of cells and organisms.
A method for protecting cells from apoptosis comprises a step of bringing a cell into contact with a sirtuin activating compound which bonds to SIRT1 of the cell to increase the deacetylase activity of the SIRT1, such as a flavone, stilbene, flavanone, isoflavone, catechin, chalcone, tannin or anthocyanidin; or a method for rendering cells sensitive to apoptosis comprises a step of bringing a cell into contact with an activating compound which bonds to SIRT1 of the cell to decrease the deacetylase activity of the SIRT1 for example a sirtuin inhibitory compound, such as a sphingolipid, e.g., sphingosine.
