PURPOSE: To provide a method of manufacture of a new metal matrix composite constituted of an aluminum-base alloy and a silicon carbide ceramic material.
CONSTITUTION: A ceramic material having silicon dioxide at the surface is heated to about 399-1093°C, and an alloy having a composition consisting of, by weight, about 3-6% copper, about 0.5-5% magnesium, and the balance essentially aluminum, is melted, and the heated ceramic material is mixed with the molten alloy. By this procedure, magnesium in the alloy is allowed to react with silicon dioxide at the surface of the ceramic material to liberate silicon into the alloy. The mixed ceramic material and alloy are cooled until the prescribed temp. is reached at a velocity where the supersaturation of copper and magnesium in the alloy is maintained. By this method, the metal matrix composite, having a primary alloy phase based on aluminum and a secondary metal phase distributed in the whole primary metal phase, can be formed.
