To obtain the subject composition capable of substantially preventing gel formation when used as a material for polymerizing itself by controlling the content of specific cyclopentadiene trimer(s).
The composition intended or polymerizing 2-ethyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a- octahydronaphthalene of formula III contains 100-5,000 ppm of cyclopentadiene trimer(s) of formula I and/or formula II, wherein the content of the trimer of formula II in the composition is pref. 100-3,000 ppm. The composition is obtained by reaction between cyclopentadiene and/or dicyclopentadiene, 5-ethyl-2- norbornene of formula IV, and butene-1 under heating. Thereby, a composition suitable for a wide range of polymerization can be afforded, promising polymers with excellent optical properties, high transparency, high heat resistance, and oil absorptivity.
