Abstract:

To provide a method and a composition for treating selected conditions of central and peripheral nervous systems employing non-synaptic mechanisms.

There are disclosed administration of agents which modulate ionic concentration and ionic balance in the central nervous system, particularly administration of ion-dependent or cation-chloride cotransporter antagonists, concretely loop diuretics are cited. This can be used: for treating seizure, seizure disorder, epilepsy, status epilecticum, migraine and pain; for treating pathophysiological effects of head trauma, stroke, ischemia and hypoxia; for treating and protecting from pathophysiological effects of neurotoxic agents such as ethanol; and for treating neuropsychiatric disorders and central nervous system edema.
