Abstract:
To provide compositions and methods for inactivating pathogens in platelets.SOLUTION: The disclosure provides an improved method, composition and kit for inactivating pathogens in a product derived from platelet apheresis, a method, kit and composition for preparing a platelet composition suitable for injection. In an aspect, a method for preparing a platelet composition, for example, pathogen-inactivated platelet compositions, is provided, where the method comprises the steps of: (a) providing a solution comprising a platelet additive solution (PAS) and a pathogen-inactivating compound (PIC); (b) mixing the solution of step (a) with a platelet preparation; (c) exposing the mixture of step (b) to light sufficient to photochemically inactivate pathogens (if existing), thereby forming a pathogen-inactivated platelet composition.SELECTED DRAWING: None
