Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:A compound, expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are formula II (n is 2W8; the mark * indicates asymmetric carbon atom) or formula III and at least one of R1 and R2 is optically active group; Y is formula IV or -CH2O-; l and m are 1 or 2] and having the optically active group.

EXAMPLE: (1R)-Methylheptyl 4'-[4"-(1S)-methylheptyloxybenzoyloxy]biphenyl-4- carboxylat-e.

USE: A ferroelectric liquid crystal or a blending agent therefor, having excellent chemical and light stability and capable of extending the temperature range exhibiting Sm*C phase without deteriorating ferroelectricity thereof by blending with other ferroelectric liquid crystals and increasing or decreasing also spontaneous polarization.

PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula V is reacted with a compound expressed by formula VI in a solvent in the presence of triethylamine to provide the compound expressed by formula I (Y is formula IV). Alternatively, a compound expressed by formula VII is reacted with a compound expressed by formula VI in the presence of NaH to afford the compound expressed by formula I (Y is -CH2O-).
