The compound is expressed by general formula (1) and expresses a smectic liquid crystal phase. The general formula (1) is R1-(Ar1)p-C≡C-(Ar2)m-C≡C-(Ar3)n-R2, wherein R1 and R2 express each an alkyl group, one or more -CH2- groups in the alkyl group may be replaced with -C≡C-, -C(R3)=C(R4)-, -CO-, -O-, -S-, -CO2-, -OCO-, -CON(R5)-, -N(R6)CO- group or -C(R3)(-O-)C(R4)- group; R3, R4, R5 and R6 express each H or an alkyl; Ar1, Ar2 and Ar3 express each a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic ring; p, m and n express each 1 or 2.
