To provide a compression ignition internal combustion engine with a plurality of fuel injection valves, capable of carrying out stable fuel combustion while suppressing the production of NOx and smoke by putting a mixture in a combustion chamber into a condition adequate to the load of the internal combustion engine.
The compression ignition internal combustion engine 10 comprises a first fuel injection valve 5 for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber 3 toward its center, a second fuel injection valve 4 provided near the center of the upper part of a cylinder 1 for injecting the fuel into the combustion chamber 3. A fuel injection timing for the first fuel injection valve 5 is controlled so that the mixture in the combustion chamber 3 is put into at least one of a stratified mixture condition corresponding to an operation region of the compression ignition internal combustion engine 10 and a homogeneous premixture condition.
