An explosion surface 28 of a cylinder head 12 opposed to a top surface of a piston 10 is provided with a recessed head cavity 29. The head cavity 29 is provided with a fuel injection nozzle 13 for injecting fuel toward a peripheral wall surface 31 of the head cavity 29, a temperature detection means 90 for detecting the temperature of the peripheral wall surface of the head cavity 29, and a controller 66 for setting the fuel injection timing and the number of fuel injection stages on the basis of the detected temperature of the peripheral wall surface.
