A compression self-igniting combustion engine is provided with a combustion pattern characteristic of once making pre-reaction near the piston top dead center of the compression stroke, and then causing main combustion in the expansion stroke. When external ignition energy amount is suitably increased during the pre-reaction period, the pre-reaction is activated more to transfer the peak point of main combustion near the piston top dead center of the expansion stroke, thereby optimizing heat efficiency. A combustion chamber 4 is provided with an auxiliary energy applying means 12 formed by an ignition plug or the like. and during the pre-reaction period of combustion detected by the pre-reaction detecting means, a proper amount of auxiliary energy is applied by the auxiliary energy applying means 12 to activate pre- reaction.
