To avoid the occurrence of collision sound of a second vane when switching an operation mode in a compression system provided with a multiple cylinder rotary compressor usable switched between a first operation mode in which both rotary compression elements perform compression work, and a second operation mode in which only the first rotary compression element substantially performs compression work.
When switching to the first operation mode from the second operation mode, the discharge side pressure of both rotary compression elements 32, 34 is applied as the back pressure of the second vane 52, and then intermediate pressure between the suction side pressure and discharge side pressure of both rotary compression elements 32, 34 is applied. When switching to the second operation mode from the first operation mode, the inflow of a refrigerant to a second cylinder is intercepted by a valve device 200, and then the suction side pressure of both rotary compression elements 32, 34 is applied as the back pressure of the second vane 52.
