To provide an economical concrete masonry retaining wall having a stabilized structure and a short construction period of time and a concrete block used therefor.

The retaining wall 1 is constituted in a state to pile the first concrete blocks 3a to 3d for widening the road on the upper parts of the second concrete blocks 4a to 4c to be usually used in several steps. Even if the first concrete blocks 3 have different up and down stationary steps, although parts except a column beam 7 are formed in the same shapes, the shape of the column beam 7 is different according to the number of stationary steps. Specifically, the column beam 7 is so set that the length projected from the front wall 5 is getting longer with the movement to the upper step from the lower step. When these are piled up, the front end sections of the column beams 7a to 7d are so constituted that they can be arranged in up and down. A supporting extent of the upper part of the retaining wall 1 is thereby enlarged.
