PURPOSE: To provide a new condensed heterocyclic carboxylic acid derivative having excellent cholinesterase inhibiting action and useful as an agent for the treatment and prevention of geriatric dementia.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I [X1 is NR4 [R4 is H, (substituted) hydrocarbon group or (substituted)acyl], O or S; X2 is NR5 [R5 is H, (substituted) hydrocarbon group or (substituted)acyl) or 0; ring A is benzene ring which may have additional substituent; R1 is H or (substituted)hydrocarbon group; Y is (substituted)amino or (substituted)nitrogen-containing saturated heterocyclic group; (n) is 1-10; (k) is 0-3; (m) is 1-8] or its salt, e.g. 1-acetyl-2,3-dihydro- N-[5--[N-ethyl-N-phenylmethyl) amino]pentyl]-1H-indole-5-carboxamide-fumaric acid salt. The compound can be produced by reacting a carboxylic acid of formula II, its salt or its reactive derivative with a compound of formula III or its salt.
