PURPOSE: To provide a new liquid crystal compound having, as a liquid crystal material, such excellent characteristics as low viscosity, low liquid crystal range and good compatibility, and also stable under circumstances for its normal use.
CONSTITUTION: The new liquid crystal compound of formula I [A is 1,4- phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene; B, C and D are each 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, pyridine-2,5-diyl or 1,3-pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; L and M are each covalent bond, ethylene, OCO, COO, ethenylene, ethynylene, OCH2 or CH2O; n, m and l are each 0 or 1 (where, not zero at the same time); X and Z are each H or F; R is fluoroalkyl, alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl or alkenyl; Y is (halogeno)alkyl, (halogeno)alkyl, CN, halogen or cyanate; W is H, or F when B is 1,4-phenylene], e.g. 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-4-(trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl)-3E-butene-1-yne. The compound of the formula I can be obtained by reaction from an acetylene derivative of formula IV and an aldehyde derivative of formula V according to the reaction formulas.
