To provide a container terminal allowing a carriage to smoothly move between two parallel traveling passages and capable of improving efficiency of cargo work and reducing electric power consumption, and a method of controlling the container terminal.
A container terminal includes: an outgoing passage 11 and a return passage 12 located adjacent to a storage lane 2 in which a container is stored and extending in the longitudinal direction of the storage lane 2; and a cart 9 self-propelling in the outgoing passage 11 and the return passage 12 bidirectionally. A transfer car 13 is installed at each of at least both ends of the outgoing passage 11 and the return passage 12. The transfer car has a main passage 14a connected to the outgoing passage 11 or the return passage 12, and transfers the main passage 14a from one of the outgoing passage 11 or the return passage 12 to the other while having the cart 9 placed thereon. A flow of the cart 9 located adjacent to the storage lane 2 is formed with at least one circular flow 10.
