When listing the contents capable of being displayed by the electronic display device (an electronic book or an electronic book device) 1, the number of the contents to be listed is detected. When the number of the detected contents is zero, zero volume display is performed. When the number of the detected contents is one, one volume display is performed. When the number of the detected contents is from 2 to 8, a flat display mode wherein a display region corresponding to the respective contents is arranged is selected as a display mode, and the contents are listed. When the number of the detected contents is 9 or more, a bookshelf display mode wherein the display region is smaller than in the flat display mode and the display region corresponding to the respective contents is arranged is selected as the display mode, and the contents are listed.
