Abstract:
Materials contg. K, Na, F and/or Cl are continuously sintered with the evolution of volatile impurities, using plant shielded from the outer atmos. and including a grate conveyor belt for drying and heating the material by gases passing through the belt. The material then flows into a rotary drum furnace followed by a cooler. The main part of the hot gases required is obtd. by burning fuel in burners located in gas ducts parallel with, but outside, the drum furnace, using sec. air heated by passage through the cooler. The temp. of the belt and the drum furnace are adjusted so most of the impurities volatilise in the drum and are fed to a gas purificn. unit(a).. Unit (a) pref. consists of a chamber fed with CaO for cooling to not >800 degrees C and condensn. of the impurities which are removed in a cyclone separator so the clean gas can be used in the heating zones on the belt.
