PURPOSE: To foresee and prevent the surface cracking of an ingot during continuous casting, the breakdown of a solidified shell, etc. by densely providing temp. detecting elements in the width direction of a continuous casting mold, and detecting the deviation of the casting temp. from a steady level to lower or higher temperature level side.
CONSTITUTION: Temp. measuring elements (thermocouples) are disposed densely in a width direction to the approximate center position in the longitudinal direction of the long side mold plates 1 of the above-mentioned molds. Of these thermcouples, the adjacent, for example, three thermocouples are defined as A, B, C, and now if it is assumed that a longitudinal crack occurs in the position B in the width direction in the mold, the mold temp. in the part B or the part including the surrounding thereof is lowered, so that the output fluctuations of the thermocouple at B deviate from a steady level to lower temp. side like the point P. on the other hand, if parts 4, 5 of the solidified shells stick on the mold side and assume the state that they are off-boarded from the ingot side shell, the gap point (y) deviates to the higher temp. side, hence it can foreseen that breakout will occur in the ingot emerged from the bottom end of the mold. Here, 2 in the figure denotes the short side mold plates and 6 the molten steel, respectively.
