PURPOSE: To continuously heat a particulate material to a high temperature with less energy and a simple device, by a method wherein a particulate material is supplied into and moved downward through a ceramic pipe penetrating vertically through a heating furnace in an airtight manner, and a hot gas is blown into the heating furnace to heat the particulate material.
CONSTITUTION: A hot gas is blown from a hot gas flow generator 8 into a heating chamber 3 to heat so that raw sand S flowing downward through the ceramic pipe 4 is heated to a predetermined temperature, and a predetermined quantity of oxygen is supplied from an oxygen gas supplying device 13 into the pipe 4. The raw sand S charged into a preheater 10 and heated by waste heat from the chamber 3 is controlledly supplied into the pipe 4 by a predetermined quantity at a time through a supplying device 12, and is made to flow downward at a predetermined velocity. The raw sand S is heated while flowing downward through the pipe 4, and organic matter adhered thereto is burned on making contact with the oxygen gas, whereby bentonite at the surfaces of the sand grains is inactivated. The raw sand S discharged from the pipe 4 is charged into a dry-type scrubber 16 by a discharger 15, and is agitated by a high-velocity gas flow, whereby bentonite adhered to the surfaces of sand grain is removed.
