PURPOSE: To produce composite materials compounded only on one side at high efficiency, by joining metal materials to be compounded, and solidifying in the mold while inserting a dissimilar material in molten state in the tundish, and separating the joint face of the materials.
CONSTITUTION: Two steel strips, for instance, of specified thickness and breadth are joined together to form a material to be compounded 6, which is passed into a graphite nozzle 5 and is supplied into a tundish 1 holding a molten metal 10 to be inserted. The material 6 should have a slightly smaller sectional area than the mold 4 so as to prevent misrun, and spot-welding is applied at proper intervals so that there may not be a large gap in the joint surface 9. The material 6 is surface treated, and preheated according to the size of the sectional area. Thus, inserting the material 6 into the molten metal 7, a composite material of square section is completed. This completed composite material is immediately compressed and separated by means of the press having wedge-formed teeth from both upper and lower sides, and two pieces of composite plates made of cast iron on one side and steel on the other may be produced simultaneously.
