Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a production capable of manufacturing methyl isocyanate by a more simplified process in a higher yield than that of a conventional process, having a great economic effect.
CONSTITUTION: In a method wherein methylcarbamic acid chloride is thermally decomposed under heating in an inert solvent, formed methyl isocyanate and the inert solvent are vaporized together with hydrogen chloride, the vaporized gases are introduced to a condenser and methyl isocyanate and the solvent are condensed and then the prepared condensate is distilled to continuously recover methyl isocyanate, chloroform is used as the solvent and the substantially whole methyl isocyanate in the gases in the condenser is condensed to continuously produce methyl isocyanate.
