To provide a method for producing methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE) by the continuous reaction of tertiary butanol and isobutylene with methanol.
This method comprises passing tertiary butanol and methanol through a first reaction zone to form a primary etherification reaction product composed of unreacted methanol, unreacted tertiary butanol, water, dimethyl ether, isobutylene, and MTBE, separating the primary etherification reaction product into a methanol recycle fraction, a tertiary butanol recycle fraction, an isobutylene fraction, and an MTBE product fraction, recycling the methanol recycle fraction and the tertiary butanol recycle fraction to an MTBE reaction zone, passing the added methanol together with at least a portion of the isobutylene fraction through a secondary reaction zone to form a secondary etherification reaction product composed of water, methanol, isobutylene, dimethyl ether, MTBE, and tertiary butanol, and recovering MTBE from the secondary etherification reaction product.
