Title:
CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION FOR NORMAL AND REVERSE ROTATION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH07133857
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To increase a transmission gear ratio and make reverse rotation possible by keeping the peripheral edges of input and output side discs in contact with the external surface of a sphere supported on a rotating shaft, changing the latitude of contact, depending upon the inclination of the rotating shaft and further changing the speeds of input and output shafts.

CONSTITUTION: The torque of an input shaft 1 is transmitted from a rotary disc 2 to a sphere 10 at a contact point A. Also, when the turning shaft 9 of the sphere 10 is vertical, the peripheral speed of a contact point B between the sphere 10 and a rotary disc 4 is constant in a direction opposite to the pint A, and the torque of the disc 4 is transmitted to an output shaft 3. When a shift lever 19 is turned forward, the shaft 9 is inclined backward, and the contact point A between the disc 2 and the sphere 10 moves in a direction toward the higher latitude of the sphere 10, while the contact point B between the disc 4 and the sphere 10 moves in a direction toward the lower latitude, thereby increasing the speed of the disc 4. Also, when the shift lever 19 is turned backward until the contact point B is aligned with the axial center of the shaft 9, the peripheral length of the contact point A becomes maximum and the peripheral length of the contact point B becomes zero, thereby stopping the output shaft 3. When the shift lever 19 is further turned backward, the contact pints A and B come to be positioned at the same hemispherical side, and rotation reversed. The speed of this reverse rotation increases, when shift lever 19 is further turned.
